6 common mistakes we make when interpreting aspects

aspect maybe The most difficult astrological pillarbecause aspects weave together all the other astrological archetypes: planets, signs, and houses. It’s very complicated!
When learning something as complex as aspects, It’s natural to make mistakes along the way.
There are most common mistakes Based on our experience working with astrology students of all levels, people make the following judgments when interpreting aspects:
Mistake #1 – Classify aspects as “hard” or “soft”, or mix squares with oppositions, or sextiles with trines
When we make these broad classifications, we miss very important interpretive nuances. Each aspect has its own unique purpose.
Logarithms are different from squares. The goal of opposition is to help us understand ourselves better by role-playing the unintegrated parts of our psyches through a one-on-one relationship.
Instead, squares help us engage with our environment by teaching us how to respond to external challenges.
Squares and oppositions work very differently and serve different purposes. The bisection is about “us” and the square is about “the world”. Very different playing field.
An aspect is more than just ‘challenging’ or ‘harmonious’ – each aspect has a unique way of operating and a very specific scope of influence. “
Mistake #2 – Giving equal weight to all aspects
Astrology software is designed to show all the geometric aspects formed by the planets in the natal chart.
When we look at the chart we see there is a line between the Sun and Neptune and another line between Neptune and Pluto and we are Prompt people to treat them as if they are of equal importance.
They don’t.
Aspects involving at least one personal planet are more relevant than aspects between slow-moving planets, which are generational.
The sphere of phase is also important. Tight aspects take precedence over loose ones.
There are some basic rules that, if followed, can help us narrow our focus and determine what is really important in a chart.
Mistake #3 – “Keyword Salad” Explanation
You have a Mars-Neptune square and you have Read all about it on the internet.
The more you read or watch videos, More descriptions sound the same.
The reality is that no cookbook describes an aspect that you can 100% relate to because Your chart is unique.
What a simplified description like “Mars square Neptune” attempts to do is summarize a complex dynamics in a few keywords – but they inevitably Missing details (sign placement, house placement, other aspects) make that aspect unique.
If astrologers were to write books about all possible Mars-Neptune combinations for the 12 signs and 12 houses, we would need a Lord of the Rings-style trilogy for each aspect.
This is not how we learn. We learn them by Understand all the building blocks of thisand slowly develop our own interpretations.
Mistake #4 – Ignoring the “big picture” of aspects
Why doesn’t your Venus trine necessarily translate into a good relationship?
That’s because of Venus Not just a trine – it may Also forms a square, opposition or quincunx to other planets. Venus squares or oppositions will further shape the expression of your natal Venus position.
While isolating aspects is a necessary first step when we begin, if we want to arrive at meaningful explanations, We need to see the full story — that is, all the aspects that the planets are made of.
Your Venus square Jupiter will behave very differently if Venus is also trine Saturn. There’s a method to madness, and it’s easier to grasp the full picture of one aspect once we understand how each aspect modifies and conditions one another.
Mistake #5 – Believing you must “know more” – or choosing breadth over depth
You know everything about squares and trines. So you go on to study minor aspects, aspect patterns, progressions, eclipse points, or other complex techniques.
This “constantly looking for answers in different places” syndrome is Often due to insufficient understanding of basic knowledge.
When we truly understand a Solar Conjunction or Nodal Opposition – when we fully grasp these fundamental aspects – we often find the answers we have been looking for. We could write an entire book just on Nodal Opposition.
Of course, if you are interested in some small aspects, it does not necessarily mean that you have not mastered the basics. There are indeed professional astrologers with extensive experience in chart reading who are proficient in all aspects and are ready to embrace more niche techniques.
However, in our experience, 99% of students—including those who are exposed to astrology—would benefit from really delving into the core aspects.
Chart reading is not about “knowing more” – more aspects, more asteroids, more forecasting techniques – but really mastering the basics.
Mistake #6 – Not “owning” the aspect
We might view a Pluto conjunction or a Saturn square as bad luck—“Why was I born with this?”—or, at best, just something we have to deal with.
However, The only way to overcome challenging expressions in all our aspects is to own them.
When we realize that we are the architects of our birth charts and life journeys, this shift in perspective allows us to see all aspects of our lives as they truly are.
Our souls choose these lessons on purpose. We chose these aspects for a reason. We need trines and squares. Life is a beautiful journey of growth and transformation.
When we truly embody this perspective, Life feels less like a battle against fate and more like an intentional union with our unique path and deeper purpose.
